Pop Culture Love (Jacko Style): The Aquabats

If you remember me talking about Yo Gabba Gabba on this illustrious site before, you will recall that the Aquabats (a ska/dance rock band from southern California) have been featured on it before. A fact I hadn't previously mentioned was that Christian Jacobs, a.k.a. lead singer MC Bat Commander, is one of the creators of Yo Gabba Gabba. Because of the Yo Gabba Gabba connection, Jacko was curious about the Aquabats' other music.

He was in luck.

I own their 1997 album "The Fury of the Aquabats," thanks to a toxic crush I had on Jimmy the Robot's little brother during my junior year of high school. I even recall a time that Jimmy the Robot came through his parents' front door, strolled into his room, and immediately left the house again—I am nearly famous because of that! Or not.

The Aquabats' silly songs and particular ska sound hadn't really graduated with me into my college years, so I was unsure that I would remember any of the songs when I popped the CD into my car a few months ago. I figured that Jack would think the music was weird and ask me to turn it off.

Cue to yesterday, when he was able to sing nearly every word of "Super Rad" with me, the only single off of that album.

I have reentered the galactic super hero world happily with Jack—it is so nice to hear these songs without the thought of "Maybe if I learn these words, Bryan will finally like me" floating around in the back of my head. There's no pressure, just me and my kid rocking out whenever we get into the car.

And yes, Caleb hates every weird second of it.
